NEW KENT, Va. (AP) — Paddy O’Prado responded to jockey Kent Desormeaux as he turned from home, pulling away to win the Grade 2 Virginia Derby on Saturday.
The 3-year-old grey colt took the lead at the top of the stretch on the inner rail and held off Interactif by 112 lengths, covering the 112 miles in 2:02.58.
The Donegal Racing colt was the 3-5 favorite and paid $3.20, $2.20 and $2.10. Interactif returned $3.40 and $2.80 as the second choice, and Krypton paid $3.40 to show.
Earlier in the day, Desormeaux and trainer Dale Romans also teamed up to win the $50,000 Chenery Stakes with 2-year-old Z Appeal.
