SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. (AP) — A mother is dead, two of her sons were seriously injured and the suspect remains at-large after what investigators say was a violent domestic violence situation.

Police say the attack happened just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning and investigators are looking for 39-year-old Jan R. Demeerleer.

A 17-year-old boy told police he awoke to a man slashing his neck with a knife. The boy survived the attack but later found his mother dead on the kitchen floor.

Spokane Valley Sgt. Dave Reagan says when officers arrived they learned one of the woman’s twin 9-year-old boys had suffered a severe head injury in the attack. The other twin was uninjured. The 17-year-old and 9-year-old were transported to a Spokane hospital.

The 9-year-old was on life support Sunday morning. Names of the victims were not being released.
