Fort Vancouver travels far to win neighborhood battle

Little League team tops Hazel Dell in state tournament

Two local Little League junior all-star baseball teams (ages 13-14) traveled across the state only to end up facing each other.

Fort Vancouver, the District 4 representative, topped District 6 representative Hazel Dell, 9-8 on Sunday at Medical Lake.

Hazel Dell won its opening game on Saturday, 6-5 over Federal Way. Fort Vancouver had a bye in the first round of the 12-team event.

On Sunday, Fort Vancouver put together an eight-run fourth inning and out-hit Hazel Dell 12-4.

Fort Vancouver next faces Central Whidbey at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Hazel Dell takes on Key Peninsula at 9 a.m. today in a loser-out game.

The state tournament runs through Saturday.

Senior baseball (ages 15-16) — Fort Vancouver fell to Chinook/Kent 7-4 on Sunday in the state tournament at Redmond. No details were reported. Lewis River was eliminated with a 4-3 loss to East Jefferson.

9-10 baseball — Mill Creek eliminated Glenwood from the state tournament in Shoreline with a 7-6 victory. Today, Central Vancouver plays East Valley in a loser-out contest.

Softball

Junior softball (ages 13-14) — Maddy Savage went 2 for 4 and came on in relief as Columbia Little League defeated Northeast Seattle 5-2 in a state-tournament contest. With the victory, the Vancouver team advanced to the semifinals of the tournament at David Douglas Park.

Ashley VanHorn was 1 for 4 with a triple for Columbia.

• In a loser-out game, Tia Notti was 3 for 5 with a triple as Battle Ground defeated Auburn, 13-12.

Notti was just part of an offensive barrage for Battle Ground. Haley Hamilton had a double and a triple, Cortney Railing was 2 for 4 with a double, and Brittney Smith was 2 for 4 with a double.

• In other games: Stilly Valley defeated Sequim 6-4 to reach the semifinals, and South Highline beat South/Central Whidbey 11-3 in a loser-out game.

• Today’s schedule consists of two loser-out games: Battle Ground vs. Sequim at 5:30 p.m., and South Highline vs. Northeast Seattle at 8 p.m.

Major softball (ages 11-12) — La Center defeated Aberdeen 15-1 in a loser-out game at the state tournament at SeaTac’s Tyee High School.
