ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — Command changes at the U.S. Coast Guard have ended a long commute for Capt. Len Tumbarello.

Every weekend for the last four years, Tumbarello had to commute from Seattle to his home to Astoria to see his wife, their two daughters and their son.

Tumbarello was the deputy commander — the second in charge — for the Coast Guard’s Sector Seattle, overseeing and managing more than 700 active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary personnel.

But Tumbarello was recently offered the job as deputy commander for the new Columbia River sector, based in Astoria, after another officer scheduled to take that job was relieved of duty following misconduct allegations.

Tumbarello says he welcomes the return to small-town life and his family.
