BROOKINGS, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say a collision between a car and a tractor-trailer rig has killed one man and started a fire on both sides of U.S. Highway 101 that halted traffic on the coastal highway for nearly six hours.
The Oregon Department of Transportation says one lane was reopened by Tuesday night.
Sgt. Scott Punch says a Toyota Scion driven by 33-year-old Vincent Jaramillo of Brookings was northbound Tuesday afternoon when it drifted into the southbound lane and collided with a Freightliner truck pulling two trailers. The truck and trailer rig broke through the guardrail, tipped on its side and caught fire, with the flames spreading into nearby brush on both sides of the road. Jaramillo was dead at the scene. The truck driver, 61-year-old Allen Hart, suffered minor injuries.
Firefighters from several nearby departments responded.
