Vancouver police converged on the area around Evergreen Park late Monday afternoon to capture a man who had previously issued warrants for his arrest, charging failure to register as a sex offender and public indecency.

About 4:55 p.m. Monday, officers were called to deal with an unwanted person at the Canyon Creek apartments, 2615 Neals Lane, just north of East Fourth Plain Boulevard, said Officer Ilia Botvinnik with the Vancouver Police Department.

When officers arrived, Charles L. Puckett, 35, ran off into a brushy area, Botvinnik said. About 10 officers took positions around the area and called in a tracking dog.

Puckett, a Vancouver resident, was arrested a short time later, for the two misdemeanor warrants and a new allegation, obstructing public servants. Monday night, he was being held without bail in the Clark County Jail, a jail official said.

Man leaves scene of collision, police say

About 4:25 p.m. Monday, officers were called to the 2900 block of Northeast 109th Avenue, in the Burton area, to find a man who allegedly caused a traffic collision there and, with minor injuries, walked away from the scene.

William C. Kellum, 45, of Vancouver had been driving south when he made a left turn in front of a northbound car, failing to yield the right of way, and they crashed. The other driver was not injured, Officer Botvinnik said.

Police traced Kellum to a friend’s home north of Fisher’s Landing. He was taken to a hospital for injuries in the crash.

Officers may send their report of the incident to deputy prosecutors, and ask them to consider filing a charge of hit-run driving, Botvinnik said.

Police say man used knife in fight

Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office deputies said they arrested a 20-year-old Ariel man Monday, for allegedly stabbing another man in a drinking party and camp out near Woodland very early Sunday.

Darin J. Jackman was jailed on suspicion of first-degree assault, according to a bulletin from the sheriff’s office.

About 12:30 a.m. Sunday, deputies and paramedics rushed to the stabbing, which occurred in the Davis Peak area off Little Kalama Road near Woodland, the bulletin said.

The victim, 21, who suffered several stab and slash wounds to his torso and legs, was taken in a private vehicle to meet rescuers on Lewis River Road, then taken by AMR Northwest ambulance paramedics to Southwest Washington Medical Center. His wounds weren’t life-threatening, but required surgeries, the bulletin said. He is a Kelso resident and his name was not released.

Deputies said Jackman drove himself to a hospital and was treated for minor injuries and released.

Jackman told police he acted in self-defense.

The case remains under investigation and witnesses are asked to call sheriff’s Sgt. Brad Thurman at 360-577-3092. Those wishing to stay anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 360-577-1206.

$70,000 damage in shop fire

Seventeen firefighters from two departments worked to bring a shop fire under control at 20111 N.W. 41st Ave. in the Ridgefield area Sunday evening, but the outbuilding was heavily damaged and its contents destroyed.

The fire was reported at 8:16 p.m. Sunday and Deputy Fire Chief Larry Bartel arrived six minutes later to find the 40-by-40-foot metal pole barn-shop in flames, according to a bulletin from Clark County Fire & Rescue.

Eight crews including some from Fire District 6 streamed water on the shop from outside and had the flames under control in 20 minutes. A vehicle and motorcycle inside were destroyed, but no people or animals were reported injured, said Capt. Ryan Berg.

Damage was estimated at $70,000. Monday night, the cause remained under investigation by a deputy fire marshal, Berg said.
