SAO PAULO (AP) — Sao Paulo remains without a stadium for the 2014 World Cup even though city officials continue to insist the goal is to host the competition’s opening match.

City authorities and members of the World Cup organizing committee met Wednesday but failed to come up with an immediate solution to keep South America’s biggest city from being dropped as a host city.

Brazilian federation president Ricardo Teixeira said the city will do everything possible “to host the opener,” but there was no decision yet on which stadium would be used to host matches.

Morumbi Stadium was dropped from the original project this year after FIFA said there was not enough financial guarantees for its renovation.

The city said it will not build a new stadium.
