BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles reinforced their weary bullpen by activating Mike Gonzalez from the disabled list and recalling left-hander Troy Patton from Triple-A Norfolk.

A series of short outings by Baltimore starters and a 13-inning game Tuesday led to the moves, which were announced before Wednesday’s game against Tampa Bay.

Signed during the offseason to be Baltimore’s closer, Gonzalez was placed on the disabled list on April 10 with a strained left shoulder. He had blown two save opportunities in three chances.

Patton was 6-9 with a 4.91 ERA in 18 starts with Norfolk. He has not played in the majors since 2007.

The Orioles optioned third baseman Josh Bell to Norfolk and moved pitcher Jim Johnson to the 60-day disabled list.
