ASHLAND, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon couple were charged with child neglect and a 6-year-old girl was taken into protective custody after a routine probation check by police found more than 500 opium poppies growing in a home garden.

Ashland police said five adults and two children — the girl and a 1-week-old boy — lived in the approximately 900-square-foot home, along with several dogs and cats.

Investigators also said they found marijuana plants and psilocybin mushroom spores, opium pipes, drug packaging materials and a book titled “The Drug Library: Hallucinogens.”

Police charged 29-year-old Jonah Shore and 24-year-old Emeth Brandov-Ysrael with child neglect and endangering the welfare of a minor. Shore was also charged for violating his probation.

Ashland Police Chief Terry Holderness said it was the first opium-growing operation he’d seen in his 33-year career.
