Four players from Clark County, including the goal scorer, were on the field on Sunday as the EastSide United Liverpool Red team won a national soccer championship.

The Gresham, Ore.-based club defeated Shattuck St. Mary’s of Minnesota 1-0 to capture the under-18 boys U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship.

The tournament featuring regional champions was played in Overland Park, Kan.

Forward Mikhail Doholis, who attends Union High School, scored in the first half and EastSide limited the Midwest champions to six shots on goal.

Doholis scored a tournament-best three goals.

Center midfielder Steven Hughes, outside midfielder Sujinda Dangvan and defender Drew White were also in the lineup for the title match. Connor Valenter also plays for the EastSide club, but missed the trip to nationals because of injury.

Shattuck St. Mary’s defeated EastSide, 1-0, on the opening day of the tournament. But the Gresham team went unbeaten the rest of the way.

Three of the four teams in the tournament went 2-1 in round-robin play, and the EastSide and Minnesota teams advanced to the final match based on goal differential.

This is the second time a team representing Oregon has won a U.S. Youth Soccer national championship, and the first since 1994.

The team arrived at Portland International Airport late Sunday and was greeted by about 150 supporters, Steven Hughes said.

A record 765 runners completed the third-year race, which is hosted by Fit Right Northwest, a store for runners.

Including the shorter courses, almost 1,700 runners and walkers took part in the event, according to organizer Dave Sobolik.
