Picnic Area still open for use

STABLER — Hemlock Picnic Area near Trout Creek in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is open, the U.S. Forest Service says.

Hemlock Dam has been removed, draining Hemlock Lake, and thus leaving the picnic area set back from the water. But the site still offers shaded tables, running water, and flush toilets.

There are trails marked in the area and a boardwalk is planned.

Hemlock Picnic Area offers a unique opportunity to visit and see an active river, floodplain, and fisheries restoration site first-hand,’’ said Dave Wickwire, Mount Adams district recreation program manager.

Free campground talks scheduled

HOOD RIVER — Free interpretative programs will be offered this summer at Eagle Creek and Wyeth campgrounds in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

Both campgrounds are on the Oregon side of the river.

At Eagle Creek, programs will include tips to see on Eagle Creek trail on Aug. 14 and a talk about oak trees on Aug. 28. Both begin at 8 p.m.

At Wyeth, offerings will include a to-be-determined natural resource topic at 8 p.m. on Aug. 7, oak trees at 8 p.m.on Aug. 21, and the history of Wyeth campground at 7 p.m. on Sept. 4.

Commercial berry permits required

Commercial huckleberry permits for the Gifford Pinchot National Forest go on sale beginning Aug. 9.

A permit is not required for personal use, which is three gallons of huckleberries per person per year.

Commercial permits cost $40 for 14 days or $75 for the season. The permits include provisions for camping, maximum stays at a camp site and include a map showing closed areas.

Commercial picking is not allowed in wilderness areas or the portion of the Sawtooth fields reserved for the Yakama Indian Nation.

Permits are available at the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument office in Chelatchie, Mount Adams District office in Trout Lake, and the Cowlitz Valley District office in Randle.
