Charred remains found in Benton Co. orchard fire

PASCO, Wash. (AP) — Firefighters found the charred remains of a body while dousing a fire at a Benton County fruit orchard near Finley.

The Tri-City Herald reports that firefighters responded to the fire late Tuesday, and found the remains next to a row of a poplar trees shortly after. The fire burned between a quarter and half an acre. The cause was not known.

The charred remains were taken to the Benton County coroner’s office for an autopsy. An identity on the body was not available.

The sheriff’s office says the fire is suspicious and is collecting evidence, although much of it was destroyed in the blaze.
