MEXICO CITY (AP) — The U.S. Consulate in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez will temporarily close pending a review of its security protocols.

The U.S. Embassy said the consulate will “remain closed until the security review is completed.”

The statement Thursday did not say what prompted the review.

The decision came about four months after drug gang hit men killed a U.S. employee of the consulate, her husband and two other people tied to the consulate.

The Ciudad Juarez consulate is the only place where Mexicans can apply for permanent residency in the U.S.
