BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — New Barcelona sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta says Mexican defender Rafael Marquez is on the verge of leaving the team.

Marquez, captain of Mexico’s World Cup team, is considering signing with Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls, MLS commissioner Don Garber said this week.

The 31-year-old has been with Barcelona since 2003 following stints with Mexico’s Atlas (1996-99) and AS Monaco (1999-03).

Zubizarreta, who replaced Txiki Begiristain, spoke Friday. He played at Barcelona between 1986-94.
