OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Liberal advocacy groups have ramped up their campaign against incumbent state Supreme Court Justice Jim Johnson in his bid for a second term, seeking to oust the high court’s most conservative member.

Johnson faces Tacoma attorney Stan Rumbaugh in an election that will be decided in the August 17 primary. Voters started receiving their ballots in the mail this week.

A group called Impartial Justice spent about $42,000 this week to send voters political mailers showing a small cutout picture of Johnson placed inside business suit pockets, and spent another $10,000 on a website video ad with the same theme, urging voters to vote against “special deals for special interests.”

Johnson says he’s never issued a ruling based on who donated to his campaign.
