A trailer at Lake Merwin Campers Hideaway caught fire Saturday, destroying the trailer, melting the siding of another trailer and igniting nearby brush.

Bystanders reported hearing an explosion and then saw a trailer at the park, 24706 N.E. Columbia Tie Road in Amboy, fully engulfed in flames, said Ben Peeler, assistant chief at Clark County Fire District 13. Clark County Fire Districts 10 and 13 responded to the call, which came in at about 12:40 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, the trailer was engulfed in flames, but firefighters were able to keep it from spreading further in the brush and to other structures, he said.

Nobody was injured in the fire. The owner of the trailer left earlier in the day and was not at the site, Peeler said.

“We’re just very fortunate the marine layer that’s in (Saturday) helped keep the fire spread minimal,” Peeler said.

Last weekend’s 90-degree temperatures and windy conditions at Lake Merwin would have made fire suppression efforts more challenging, he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Clark County Fire Marshal’s Office.
