CASHMERE, Wash. (AP) — People are being allowed to return to their homes after crews worked through the night battling a large wildfire in north-central Washington.
Fire information officer Randy Shepard said Sunday morning that rain has helped crews fight the blaze that has burned more than two square miles of grass, brush and trees in Nahahum Canyon. At least 53 homes in the grassy canyon had been evacuated.
One unoccupied structure was burned by the blaze.
Two other smaller fires burning south of Cashmere were mostly contained. Seven hundred people are fighting the three fires.
Elsewhere, a large fire burned in the Stehekin area. The 4,000-acre Rainbow Bridge Fire is burning 1.5 miles north of Stehekin Landing.
