BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Romania gymnastics coach Nicolae Forminte has resigned.

According to Daily Pro-Sport, Forminte said Tuesday he quit because he feels the gymnastics federation no longer has confidence in him after it called on former coaches Marian Bitang and Octavian Belu to supervise training for the 2012 London Olympics.

Forminte says “I no longer have a place here.”

Federation chief Adrian Stoica confirmed Forminte’s departure. He said he tried to dissuade him from leaving.

Forminte became head coach in 2005 after Belu quit the post and was named adviser to Romania President Traian Basescu.

Under Forminte’s leadership, Romania won the bronze medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
