AMERICAN CANYON, Calif. (AP) — The California Highway Patrol says four members of the same family were killed when their car was hit by two trucks on a Napa County highway. The driver of the Subaru Forester was identified as 48-year-old Matthew Jay Smith of Ashland, Ore.

The CHP says the family members were riding in the Subaru when it was hit from behind by a big rig on Highway 12 in American Canyon Thursday morning.

CHP Officer Jaret Paulson says after the initial impact, the Subaru was hit head-on and crushed by a second truck.

Also killed was Matthew Smith’s daughter, 19-year-old Laura Smith of Downingtown, Pa. and Smith’s parents, 80-year-old Richard Smith and 74-year-old Sally Smith, of Simsbury, Conn.

The CHP says the driver of the big rig that rear-ended the family suffered minor to moderate injuries.

The driver of the second truck was not hurt.
