MADRID (AP) — Alistair Brownlee has won the Madrid Triathlon for the second straight year by sprinting ahead in the final 500 meters.

The 22-year-old Briton says it was “by far the proudest victory” in his career.

Brownlee, the current world champion, overcame very hot conditions to finish the ITU world championship event in 1 hour, 52 minutes, 41 seconds.

Courtney Atkinson of Australia was 10 seconds behind, and Sven Riederer of Switzerland finished third in 1:53:07 on Sunday.

Switzerland’s Nicola Spirig won the women’s event Saturday in 2:06:00, four seconds ahead of Emmie Charayon of France. Britain’s Helen Jenkins was third in 2:06:08.
