No big surprises on first day of candidate filing
Murray leads the list; deadline is Friday

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray was among the dozens of incumbents and announced candidates who made it official Monday, the first day political hopefuls were allowed to file with state and local election offices for the August primary.
In local races, only previously announced candidates popped up on the Clark County Election filings website. Candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday to file for election.
In the 17th District, Vancouver Democrat Martin Hash will challenge Republican Paul Harris of Vancouver. Republican Brian Peck filed for the other seat.
In the 49th District, incumbent Rep. Jim Moeller, D-Vancouver, filed for re-election. He will be challenged by Republican Craig Riley.
In District 18, independent Jon T. Haugen of Vancouver filed for State Representative Position 1, while incumbent Rep. Ed Orcutt, R-Kalama, filed for Position 2.
Sen. Jim Honeyford, R-Sunnyside, was the only one to throw his hat in for the District 15 Senator seat Monday, while Republican Rep. David Taylor of Moxee filed for the House. That district includes Skamania County and a sliver of Clark County outside Washougal.
Democrat Cheryl Crist filed for Congressman Brian Baird’s vacated seat in the 3rd Congressional District.
In local races, Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart was the first and only to file for his race on Monday, and Vancouver City Councilor Bart Hansen also is the sole applicant for his spot so far.
Tony Golik, a Democrat, filed for prosecuting attorney at 8:56 a.m. Longtime Republican Clark County Auditor Greg Kimsey put his name in for re-election, and County Clerk Sherry Parker, a Democrat, filed for a second term.
Republican Peter Van Nortwick signed up for assessor, a seat being vacated by Linda Franklin. Democrat Doug Lasher will seek to retain his job as treasurer.
