The Columbian
Published: June 9, 2010, 12:00am

Vancouver will celebrate Flag Day at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the bandstand on the Vancouver Barracks parade grounds.

The ceremony includes the annual National Pause for the Pledge, which will be led by two local men who have been accepted into our nation’s military academies. Michael Madrid, Prairie High School, will attend the Naval Academy; and David Baker, Columbia River High School, will attend the Merchant Marine Academy.

Fifth-grade students from Marshall Elementary will have a dual role in the ceremony. Dressed in 18th-century costumes, the students will speak about the meaning of the flag from the perspective of Colonial-era citizens including Betsy Ross, blacksmiths and shoemakers. The students also will judge a patriotic necktie competition among Clark County’s mayors.

Colors will be presented by the Prairie High School Air Force Junior ROTC Color Guard, which will also perform with its rifle squad.

Music will be provided by the Columbia River Chorus of the Sweet Adelines International and vocal soloist Kyra Smith of Mountain View High School.

Speakers include 2009 Marshall Public Leadership Award recipient Phil Haberthur; 2010 Marshall Youth Leadership Award recipient Lindsey Elhart; and Melissa Sandvold, representing event sponsor Veolia Water.

The Flag Day Ceremony is one of several free Celebrate Freedom programs organized by the Fort Vancouver National Trust.

Free refreshments will be provided.
