PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A former Reynolds High School girls basketball coach accused of having sex with a 17-year-old player has pleaded not guilty to six counts of second-degree sex abuse.

Dorian Rudolph Gibson entered his pleas Thursday in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

The case is among the first brought under a new Oregon law that enhances the penalties — from probation to prison — for coaches who sexually abuse their athletes.

Gresham police Detective Rick Blake says the sex is considered nonconsensual because the player is younger than 18, and the coach is older than 21. Gibson is 26.

Blake says police began investigating May 3 after receiving information from several people.
