MARYSVILLE, Wash. (AP) — A Marysville School Board member is being criticized this week for an e-mail he sent linking race with academic achievement.

This isn’t the first time Michael Kundu has been accused of racial insensitivity. Years ago he was at the center of another controversy.

The current issue involves an e-mail he sent last week to fellow school board members and school administrators. In it, he suggests a connection between racial genetics and intellectual achievement. Kundu told The Herald newspaper he’s trying to start a debate, not promote discrimination.

His e-mail has led to sharp rebukes from local civil rights groups, school board members and the district’s administrative staff.

Kundu has been on the school board since being elected in November.
