McKENNA, Wash. (AP) — A Pierce County sheriff’s spokesman says a 69-year-old McKenna man shot and fatally wounded a younger man he saw taking a scrap drainage pipe from the side of the road in front of his house.

Sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer says the 20-year-old victim was shot in the head and died Thursday afternoon at Madigan Army Medical Center.

Troyer says the older man was jailed for investigation of assault but could face a homicide charge.

Troyer says the older man reported seeing two men taking the pipe Wednesday night.

He fired two shots in the air. The men tried to drive off, but it was a dead-end road and they had to turn around. Troyer says as they drove past the man’s house he fired several times into the car. A 20-year-old passenger was slightly injured when the car crashed into a tree.
