McKENNA, Wash. (AP) — The Pierce County sheriff’s office says a man shot and critically wounded a man he saw taking drainage pipe near McKenna.

Detective Ed Troyer told The News Tribune of Tacoma the 69-year-old man saw two men taking the pipe Wednesday night from the side of the road in front of his house.

He fired two shots in the air. The men tried to drive off, but it was a dead-end road and they had to turn around. Troyer says as they drove past the man’s house he fired several times into the car, hitting the driver in the head.

The 20-year-old was taken to Madigan Army Medical Center.

The car crashed into a tree. A 20-year-old passenger was slightly injured.

The 69-year-old has been jailed for investigation of assault.
