Our Readers’ Views on political candidates

Russell will protect states’ rights

Obamacare is coming to Washington state and we need someone in the state Legislature who will stand against the federal mandates handed down. That is why I am supporting Jon Russell for state representative from the 18th Legislative District, Position 1.

Russell is the owner of a family medical practice and he will take a constitutional approach to protecting our freedoms. Too many politicians compromise on big issues like health care. Russell will reduce the size of government and stand with us during the difficult times ahead.

Heck’s business skill invaluable

I support Denny Heck for the House of Representatives in the 3rd Congressional District. He has the political savvy and the knowledge to handle the job. We need his experience and that knowledge back in Washington, D.C. He will work for creating jobs in this state. His business knowledge is invaluable to the congressional district. We need Denny Heck in Congress.

Examine issues of wars and tariffs

At a recent meeting of legislative districts, Denny Heck, candidate for U.S. representative, was unclear as to his views on our wars. He expressed concern for job creation, however he was not supportive of tariffs to protect American manufacturing, even though it was pointed out that tariffs were used to build American industry since the founding of this nation, and they worked.

Candidate Cheryl Crist was opposed to the wars but was not asked about tariffs. It would be interesting to know how the other candidates feel about these two issues: wars and protecting American manufacturing and jobs through tariffs.

Herrera is right candidate for D.C.

Since the $860 billion stimulus bill was passed 15 months ago, we have lost 2.5 million jobs. Even worse, of the 15 million unemployed in May, over one-half have been out of work for six months or more. At over 13 percent, Clark County has the highest unemployment rate in the state.

That’s why I’m glad that Jaime Herrera is running for the U.S. Congress on a platform of allowing us taxpayers to keep more of our hard-earned money and to lower taxes and stop the wasteful spending. We need a representative in Congress like Herrera who creates an atmosphere where our local businesses can survive.

Better choices than Herrera

I read about Republican state Rep. Jaime Herrera’s 3rd Congressional District race campaign kick-off fundraiser with special interest (pardon the pun) as she did not respond to either of my communications about local issues last winter (nor did my state senator, Joseph Zarelli, R-Ridgefield).

Only state Rep. Ed Orcutt, R-Kalama, responded, and he was articulate and open to two-way communication from a friendly Democrat. (Orcutt is seeking re-election as 18th Legislative District representative, position 2.) Given that Orcutt has five additional years of state House experience, and actually has time for his constituents, I have to wonder why he is not running for the U.S. House of Representatives instead.

Probst’s tireless work applauded

My congratulations to state Rep. Tim Probst, D-Vancouver, for his commitment to passage of HB 2630, creating a job-training program. This bill will target unemployed workers and help them to get new training in high-demand industries. Probst’s tireless work to keep this bill on track and gain bipartisan support shows what can be done when you work hard, have a good idea, and show strong leadership. His work will bring many thanks from those who are retrained during the coming years. (Probst seeks re-election as 17th District Representative, Position 1.)

Murray has excellent record

I was appalled to learn that a person from Washington state had threatened to harm our U.S. Sen. Patty Murray. I decided that the best way to express my concern, support and appreciation for the excellent work she has done in the Senate was to make a donation to her re-election fund.

Rossi offers best course for country

The May 28 story, “Rossi offers few specifics for region,” was very negative toward Dino Rossi. The story reported more about U.S. Sen. Patty Murray’s efforts to spend taxpayer dollars for Washington. We need common-sense candidates who will do something for the good of our country, not what gets them re-elected. It’s time to elect candidates, such as Rossi, who will work for We The People and our great country, not costly legislative bills that do not create jobs or encourage businesses to grow but drown our country in unsustainable debt. That’s what Murray and Congress have done since 2006. Our nation’s debt is unconscionable.

Rossi doesn’t get it

I read with utter amazement Dino Rossi’s statement that “the campaign is really about the function of government and allowing the private sector to do what they do best.” Is he kidding? We should follow sterling role models such as Enron, BP, AIG, Lehman Brothers, and Halliburton, just to name a few? Sen. Patty Murray has tried to create jobs for workers in Southwest Washington. She recognizes that not all citizens can afford decent medical care. I hope voters will return Murray to the U.S. Senate; she has earned our trust and our vote. We don’t need any more obstructionist “Party of No” members in Congress.

Support solid for Didier

Clint Didier knows he wants to be your senator from the 3rd Congressional District. Didier knows what he will do as senator: restrain runaway spending, borrowing and regulating by following the Constitution. His supporters know Didier means it.

Dino Rossi has only recently decided he wants to run. Though personally well-known, Rossi’s policy stances are generic and vague. The media say Rossi is unstoppable and that the other Republican senatorial candidates should surrender. Really? Didier’s campaign fund is one of the largest. Didier’s support grows. Didier’s constitutional conservatism is solid.

Surrender? That’s nuts.
