ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have signed free agent pitcher Jeff Suppan and plan to start him Tuesday night.

The 35-year-old Suppan was cut by Milwaukee last week after going 0-2 with a 7.84 ERA. He was MVP of the 2006 NL championship series while with the Cardinals.

Suppan’s first game in his return to the Cardinals will be at home against the Seattle Mariners.

Cardinals rookie right-hander Adam Ottavino, who was 0-3 with a 7.53 ERA in three starts, was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

St. Louis manager Tony La Russa juggled his lineup Monday night against Seattle after a 1-5 trip. La Russa batted Matt Holliday second for the first time this season and put pitcher Adam Wainwright eighth.
