TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs have a new captain — defenseman Dion Phaneuf. The team hasn’t had a captain since Mats Sundin left the club in the summer of 2008.
Phaneuf was acquired in January in a blockbuster deal with the Calgary Flames. He had 10 points in 26 games with the Maple Leafs.
Coach Ron Wilson has said the 25-year-old Phaneuf provided a healthy influence on a team with many young players.
Toronto was last in the Eastern Conference last season.
