SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Although they have rejected a Republican move to call an immediate special session of the Oregon Legislature, leaders of the majority Democrats say one is looking more likely later this summer.
Legislators got briefings this week on the details of the 9 percent cuts that Gov. Ted Kulongoski has ordered to cope with a revenue shortfall.
House Speaker Dave Hunt says lawmakers still want to mitigate some of the cuts, but they’re waiting to see whether Congress approves an extension of aid to shore up state budgets.
Hunt and Senate President Peter Courtney say the Legislature would have to agree on a plan before any session.
