BLAINE, Wash. (AP) — Blaine, Wash., police say at least one person tried to turn the annual Hands Across the Border goodwill event into cash across the border.

A U.S. Border Patrol official also tells The Bellingham Herald that some people tried to sneak into the United States during Sunday’s event at Peace Arch Park on the U.S.-Canadian border.

Blaine police saw three people behaving strangely at the event and alerted Canadian officers that the people were trying to get into Canada illegally. Blaine Police Chief Mike Haslip says at least one person in the group was attempting to smuggle a little more than $10,000 into Canada.

No additional information about the cases was immediately available Thursday from border officials.

The event lets thousands of children from scouting groups, plus law enforcement and veterans meet to celebrate international goodwill.
