SEATTLE (AP) — The Museum of Flight in Seattle plans to break ground next week on a building near Boeing Field that could house a space shuttle.

There’s no guarantee Seattle will get one of three shuttles — the Enterprise, Endeavor or Atlantis — but the museum must have the building finished by July 2011 to be considered. The Discovery is already going to the Smithsonian, which will release the Enterprise — the shuttle prototype.

The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce reports the $12 million Space Gallery will have a glass facade and be lit at night allowing people passing by to see the shuttle.

Former astronaut and museum CEO Bonnie Dunbar says if it doesn’t win one of the shuttles the gallery space could be used for other NASA artifacts.
