Yakamas warned to be cautious about job offers

TOPPENISH, Wash. (AP) — The Yakama Nation has warned tribal members to be cautious about giving out personal information to recruiters offering lucrative jobs to help clean up the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

The Washington state Attorney General’s Office says authorities have not been able to determine whether the jobs offered are legitimately tied to BP’s cleanup efforts but that it’s unlikely.

The tribe issued a warning Thursday after recruiters promised wages of $40 per hour and bus transportation to Louisiana and Florida. Many tribal members gave up personal information and some even quit their jobs.

Tribal Council Chairman Harry Smiskin says the tribe is suspicious.

But the man promising the jobs, Christino Rosado, told the Yakima Herald-Republic he plans to start sending the first 160 Yakamas to the Gulf within a week.
