SUMNER, Wash. (AP) — A man sitting on the railroad tracks was struck and killed by a northbound freight train at 12:40 a.m. Monday.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe spokesman Gus Melonas (mel-OWN’-us) says the train went into emergency braking when the man was seen but couldn’t stop in time.
Investigators are trying to determine why he was on the tracks. He was near the Sumner station, but not at a crossing.
Melonas says the accident delayed two freight trains. Amtrak or commuter trains were not affected.
