RENO, Nev. (AP) — Horse protection advocates in Nevada are asking the FBI to step in to prevent the sale or transport of nearly 2,000 mustangs the government removed from public rangeland this winter.
They want the captured horses to remain in holding pens until the Bureau of Land Management verifies enough were left behind to sustain the wild herd in the Calico mountains 200 miles north of Reno.
Cindy MacDonald of Las Vegas says in her complaint to the FBI that recent independent observations suggest there remain nowhere near the 600 to 900 horses the BLM said it intended to leave there in compliance with federal law.
BLM spokesman Tom Gorey says they are confident they are following the law and welcome any inquiries from the FBI.
