MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — The Grants Pass Downs racetrack went into the 2010 season with high hopes a new surface would cut down on racehorse deaths.
But the Mail Tribune reports those hopes were dashed when two horses had to be put down after suffering injuries opening weekend.
The Oregon Racing Commission ordered the dirt track replaced after six horses died in two seasons. Executive director Randy Evers says jockeys and trainers told him it is in excellent condition.
But on Saturday racetrack veterinarians euthanized two thoroughbreds that broke down in the eighth race.
