PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A man who had been a fugitive for nine years in the Portland area and tried to change his identity has been arrested by the U.S. Marshals Oregon Fugitive Task Force.

Federal marshals said 34-year-old David Jay Ristick was charged with identity theft, forgery, possession of a forgery instrument and failure to appear on a charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

The charges are all from Multnomah County and date back to 2001, when marshals said Ristick began to erase his old life and identity in order to avoid prosecution, including a new Social Security Card and birth certificate.

Marshals said exhaustive research and interviews led to the Monday night arrest in Portland.
