PORT ORCHARD, Wash. (AP) — A Kitsap County sheriff’s spokesman says the pilot of a small plane survived a crash Wednesday evening with only an injury to his hand. No one else was injured.

The 47-year-old pilot told deputies he took off from a private airstrip near Port Orchard and quickly realized he had mechanical problems. He says he was trying to set the plane down in a pasture.

Sheriff’s spokesman Scott Wilson says the man did a good job to avoid causing more damage on the ground and walk away with just an injured hand.

The single-engine plane was identified as a de Havilland Chipmunk.
