Western Washington University junior distance runner Sarah Porter will compete in the 10,000 meters at the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Hockinson High School graduate is a two-time NCAA Division II All-America selection in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track. She placed second in NCAA-II in both cross country and the outdoor 10,000.

The women’s 10,000 race is scheduled for 6:55 p.m. Pacific time at Drake Stadium.

Porter — who was honored as WWU’s Female Athlete of the Year for all sports — qualified for USATF nationals by meeting the automatic qualifying standard at the Payton Jordan Cardinal Invitational on the campus of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., on May 1.

Porter’s time of 33 minutes, 36.83 seconds was more than nine seconds faster than the “A” qualifying standard. It was also her personal best by almost 54 seconds and was 32 seconds faster than the Great Northwest Athletic Conference record of 34:08.64 set by Karen Dickson of Seattle Pacific in 2005.
