Cavs’ coaching search crawling

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Cavaliers’ search for a new coach may rest in the bejeweled hands of Phil Jackson.

The Lord of NBA championship rings, Jackson, who just won his 11th title with the Los Angeles Lakers, said earlier this week that he is leaning toward retirement but that he won’t have a final decision until next week. Jackson’s uncertainty directly impacts the Cavs, who have spoken to a number of candidates but have Byron Scott near the top of their wish list.

Scott’s preference would be to coach the Lakers if Jackson leaves. It’s not known how long the Cavs are willing to wait on Scott.

General manager Chris Grant said Thursday night following the draft that Cavs have not wavered from their process to “find the right guy.”

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo recently turned down an offer from Cleveland, partly because he didn’t know if LeBron James would be re-signing with the Cavs.
