ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — Big changes are coming to the Coast Guard’s organization in the Pacific Northwest.

As part of a systemwide transformation, the service will concentrate more leadership in Astoria and shift it from Portland. Among the changes, 35 new Coast Guard jobs will go to Astoria and the Coast Guard base there will handle Columbia River Bar closures rather than Portland.

In August, Capt. Doug Kaup will become commander of the new Sector Columbia River, with new responsibilities, including being responsible for much of the security on the lower river.
