JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Johannesburg authorities say the venue for the World Cup final went 1 billion rand ($133 million) over budget.
Johannesburg city councilman Parks Tau said Wednesday that Soccer City ended up costing 3.2 billion rand ($424 million) due to the rising price of building materials.
The stadium, which will host the opening and closing matches of the tournament, which runs from June 11-July 11, was handed over to the city Wednesday — 99 days before kickoff — by the Aveng construction group.
Work on transport infrastructure around the stadium is scheduled for completion in mid-March.
