COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) — The U.S Environmental Protection Agency has formally added the abandoned Black Butte mercury mine near Cottage Grove to its Superfund list of most contaminated cleanup sites.
Last fall, the EPA proposed adding the mine to the Superfund list. On Wednesday, The Oregonian reports, the agency made it official.
The EPA says waste from the old mine is leaching mercury, arsenic and other contaminants into creeks flowing into Cottage Grove Reservoir.
