An 8-year-old boy was hurt Saturday morning when he fell off the back bumper of a moving vehicle in a rural neighborhood east of Battle Ground.

Brandon Lee was briefly knocked unconscious when he fell from the back of his father’s Ford Escort wagon in the 22500 block of 216th Circle, a private road in a vacant gated development north of Hockinson, said Clark County Sheriff’s Sgt. Chuck Christensen.

The boy’s father, 32-year-old Jeremy Lee of Battle Ground, didn’t have a cell phone with him and took his son back to their home to summon help, Christensen said.

Crews from Fire District 3 responded, and the boy was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland. He was reported in fair condition Saturday evening.

Christensen said Brandon and two other boys had been standing on the back bumper of the Escort, holding on to a roof rack as Jeremy Lee drove very slowly, when the accident occurred.

Christensen said no citations were issued, though the incident report was submitted for review for possible charges.

Portland motorcyclist critically hurt in crash

A Portland man was critically injured early Saturday in a motorcycle crash on state Highway 14 about 5 miles east of Washougal, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Charles M. Haberbush, 51, suffered multiple traumatic injuries about 9:17 a.m. when he lost control of his 2007 Suzuki motorcycle on a curve west of Cape Horn. The westbound motorcycle crossed the eastbound lanes, then went off the highway and crashed into a concrete barrier.

Haberbush was taken by ambulance to Southwest Washington Medical Center with a broken leg and ribs, a small brain bleed, a ruptured spleen and punctured lung, according to a WSP bulletin.

A hospital spokeswoman said he was in critical condition in the hospital’s intensive care unit late Saturday afternoon.
