Weather eye: Bundle up for a wintry week

Although we are in the meteorological spring weather season, in a matter of hours, it will certainly feel like the astronomical winter we are in officially. Clouds will be on the increase today, and colder-than-normal weather with low snow levels and periods of rain and showers will persist for the next week to 10 days. Could this turn out to be a cold, wet March despite its fair beginning?

I recorded a high of 69 degrees Saturday afternoon, the warmest since a high of 69 degrees on October 27, 2009. Yeah, it’s been a while. Saturday was our nicest day in a long while, and the sidewalk along the Columbia River was packed with people of all ages and some just basking in the sunshine wearing summer attire. Yep the sunshine and warmth brought the masses outside. Just remember that Saturday feeling as you bundle up for the rest of the week.

The possibility of snow was in the Puget Sound region’s forecast for Monday afternoon and night. Weather forecasters mentioned that conditions may be good for a Puget Sound Convergence Zone to set up somewhere between Seattle and Everett. This type of pattern can cause some locally heavy wet snow even in March. Locally, it looks like the sticking snow level will be around 1,000 feet or higher, so look for some white on our hills if clouds lift later Tuesday. Highs are forecast in the 40s and lows near freezing overnight — especially if we get any clearing at all. With the cold air aloft, expect scattered thunderstorms and ice pellets as a possibility here.
