WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama honored the national championship Alabama football team at a White House event where the president proclaimed, “The Tide is back.”

The president capped his remarks by declaring “Roll Tide” to the applause of dozens of Alabama fans in attendance. He then received a football, helmet and jersey from Alabama players and went on to shake the hands of most of the team, including coach Nick Saban and Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram.

Alabama defeated Texas 37-21 in January for the national championship — the latest of several titles won over the years by one of college football’s most storied programs.
