The chemistry was perfect.

So was the result.

The Columbia Timbers won the Washington Youth Soccer state championship on Sunday, completing a dominating run through the boys under-17 division of Washington’s most competitive tournament.

After rolling to a 4-0 win over Emerald City in the semifinals on Saturday, the Timbers beat the South Hill Revolution from Puyallup, 3-1, in Sunday’s championship match at the Starfire Complex in Tukwila.

The Timbers will be the Washington representative to the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals, to be held in June in Albuquerque, N.M.

“This was absolutely the product of great chemistry,” Timbers coach Ryan Southard said.

“They were able to demonstrate character and chemistry at key points of the season.”

Southard said the team added some players last summer from developmental-level teams after several veterans left for clubs in Oregon. He said the chemistry was strong throughout the season.

Nate Barber, who is from Mount Vernon, opened the scoring for the Timbers in Sunday’s final. In the first few minutes, he converted an assist from Union High School’s Hudson Poisant.

Jarren Parthemer of Hockinson scored the second goal with an assist from Josh York of Evergreen High.

Ridgefield’s Travis Heim capped a strong tournament with the final goal. Heim had seven of the Timbers’ goals in the Championship Cup tournament. The Timbers outscored their opponents 20-2 on their way to the championship.

The Championship Cup is the most competitive of Washington Youth Soccer’s state tournaments. It is the tournament for top-level premier clubs, though any Washington club can choose to enter.

The Championship Cup tournaments for girls teams and for the boys U12-U14 age groups begin later this month. The boys high school age groups play earlier because the high school season is in the spring.

In Saturday’s semifinal, the Timbers defeated the tournament’s top-seeded team, Emerald City of Seattle. York scored twice. Heim and Barber also scored. Goalkeeper Alex Wheelon (Union) made eight saves.

Other players for the Timbers’ state cup run were Nathan Barber, Anthony Carlsen, Sean Chesebro, Erik Davies, Daniel Froese, Sergio Garcia, Derek Johnson, Robert Knight, Brandon Langeland, Ryan Schoellkopf, and Joseph White.

Challenge Cup

The boys under-16 Columbia Timbers Blue team fell short in the Challenge Cup finals on Sunday, but will still participate in a regional tournament.

Eastside FC, from the Bellevue area, scored in the first overtime and held the lead to defeat Timbers Blue, 2-1, in Sunday’s final. Bobby Hutchin scored for Columbia Premier.

Timbers Blue beat Club Dos of Kent, 3-1, in the semifinals on Saturday in Tukwila. Jordan Montenegro had two goals, and Keith Thorkildson scored on a header.

Sunday’s final match against Eastside Soccer was tied in regulation play at 1 all, Eastside scored in the first overtime period and held on for the win.

With the second-place finish in the Challenge Cup — the mid-level Washington Youth Soccer state tournament — the Timbers Blue will play in a U.S. Youth Soccer President’s Cup Regional Tournament, to be held June 16-20 in Medford, Ore.

Sunday was the first loss in three seasons for this CPSA team. This team won the 2008 Commissioner’s Cup as Orchard Soccer Club’s Northstar United. In 2009, it won the Commissioner’s Cup tournament as Vancouver United Northstar.

In the 2009 fall season, the team moved up to the Player Development League’s Division 3, and was undefeated league champion.

Playing on the Commissioner’s Cup winning teams of 2008 and 2009 were Corey Davidson, Joseph Whalen, Keith Thorkildson, Toby Martin, Kyle Miller, David Orchard, Ryan Cebula, Jonah Nibler and Jordan Montenegro. Joining the team this season were Will Fanning, Bobby Hutchin, Cole Howard, Austin Saban, Tu Nguyen and Kevin Vazquez.

Johnathon Davidson is the head coach, assisted by his sister, Kimberly Davidson, Tim Edman and Mike Martin.
