Sunnyside Cemetery named historic site
Tuesday, March 9, 2010
Sunnyside Cemetery, a one-acre parcel north of Washougal, is the newest addition to the Clark County Heritage Register.
The 129-year-old cemetery holds the graves of 194 early east county settlers and their descendants.
It was added to the register on March 9.
It’s located at Southeast Coffey Road and Eighth Way, around the first turn off Washougal River Road north of the Little Washougal River.
The area’s first white settlers were Swiss and German immigrants. Land for the cemetery was donated by Frederick “Fritz” Krohn, a German native who came to the area in the 1870s and whose children were the first people buried in the cemetery.
The site holds the graves of many Clark County families, whose names include Loeffel, Blackwood, Utehs, Stauffer, Kloninger and Luthy.
Donald Stauffer of Stauffer Dairy is the current administrator of the Sunnyside Memorial Cemetery Association.
