CRESCENT CITY, Calif. (AP) — A section of a rural Northern California highway about 15 miles from the Oregon border has reopened to traffic after crews cleared a rock slide.

California Department of Transportation spokeswoman Julie East says both lanes of Highway 199 near the community of Patrick Creek were open as of Tuesday afternoon. The road connects Highway 101 to Interstate 5.

About 2,000 cubic yards of rock came falling down on the highway around 3:30 a.m. Monday, forcing both lanes to close.

Meanwhile, Highway 96 near the Humboldt-Siskiyou county line remains closed after an estimated 40,000 cubic yards, or 2,000 truck loads, of rock buried the roadway Feb. 27. East says she’s still not sure when the road will reopen.

No one was injured in either slide. Both are blamed on recent rains.
