Skyview’s Bond suffers back injury

Nikki Bond, a sophomore basketball standout from Skyview, is recovering from her second serious sports injury in less than a year.

Bond broke the second spinal lumbar after a collision when several players scrambled for a loose ball during the Class 4A District 4 championship girls basketball game on Feb. 25. She spent a few days in a hospital but maintained a positive attitude.

“My first reaction was I’m glad it wasn’t my knee,” Bond said. “This will only take weeks to recover from, not months.”

Bond, who made The Columbian’s All-Region team as a freshman, tore her anterior cruiciate ligament in a knee last summer. After surgery and rehabilitation, she returned to the Storm late this season.

Bond was told her back will take six to eight weeks to recover. Her basketball coaches have advised her to avoid any tough workouts until summer basketball, to give more time for her knee and this back injury to heal.

Local players sign with colleges

Two more signings:

Columbia River football player Cody Gilder has signed a letter of intent to play football at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia.

Gilder, an offensive lineman, helped the Chieftains reach the Class 3A state playoffs this past fall.

Kelsey Frasier, a senior at Hudson’s Bay, has signed a letter of intent to play women’s soccer at Northwest University in Kirkland.

Frasier was voted second-team forward for the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League in the fall.

Concert for Trey Foote Foundation

Three bands featuring students from Skyview High School will be holding a benefit concert for the Trey Foote Foundation at 7 p.m. tonight at the high school’s auditorium.

“If All Else Fails,” “Faire du Surf,” and “Search & Rescue” will play in an effort to promote spirit and support the foundation. Tickets are $3 in advance or $5 at the door. For tickets, call 360-635-2227.

Trey Foote was a Skyview student when he died in 2006 after a battle with cancer. His fight inspired his football team, his school, and later the Vancouver community. The Trey Foote Foundation awards a scholarship to a Skyview senior each year and also raises funds to help fight cancer.
